The portability of a laptop forces us to use it in all kinds of strange positions – most of which are unhealthy. If you spend a lot of time behind a laptop, you need a suitable table and chair to protect your health. But what is the ideal height for a laptop table?

Depending on your size, the table height of the notebook you use should be between 24.5 and 34 inches. There is a big difference between valleys and peaks, so we have to go further to find the ideal altitude for you!

Unlike traditional desktops, which have a keyboard and screen that are independent of the main units, laptops work as a single unit.

That’s why it’s almost impossible to find the ideal solution for the proper long-term use of a notebook without additional peripherals – at least one external keyboard is required.

Otherwise, even with a perfect desk height, you’ll still have trouble typing or using your laptop.

Jup, it’s definitely not a good idea for a long time!

But let’s solve the problems one by one and start at the ideal height of the laptop table. In fact, this must go hand in hand with the height of the chair: both heights must be taken into account in order to create a perfect working environment.

The good thing is that all office/computer chairs are height-adjustable at the touch of a button, so you won’t have much trouble finding the ideal height for your chair.

But with a laptop, everything is a little different and you need to make sure you buy the right laptop based on your actual size.

Ideal notebook table height

See the list below to find out how high your laptop table should be for your own size:

Your size is Table height
5′ 3 (160 cm) 25.4 (65 cm)
5′4″ (163 cm) 25.8 (66 cm)
5′5″ (165 cm) 26.2 (67 cm)
5′ 6 (168 cm) 26.6 (68 cm)
5′ 7 (170 cm) 27.0 (69 cm)
5′ 8 (173 cm) 27.4 (70 cm)
5′9″ (175 cm) 27.8 (71 cm)
5′ 10 (178 cm) 28.2 (72 cm)
511 (180 cm) 28.6 (73 cm)
6′ 0 (183 cm) 29.0 (74 cm)
61 (185 cm) 29.4 (75 cm)
6′ 2 (188 cm) 29.8 (76 cm)
6′ 3 (190 cm) 30.2 (77 cm)
6′ 4 (193 cm) 30.6 (78 cm)
6′ 5 (196 cm) 31.0 (79 cm)

As you can see, the table height of your laptop should increase by 0.4 (about 1 cm per 3 cm) per 0’1.

It’s more than the height of your desk!

Now that you’ve set your desk to the ideal height and your desk chair is in a comfortable position, it’s time to set the ideal screen height for your laptop.

It then becomes complicated and extra peripherals come in handy.

If you place the notebook on a table – even though it is at the ideal height for your body – you will still be placed in a strange position because the notebook screen height is not what it should be.

The screen will essentially act as a monitor, and you will need to use an external keyboard and mouse. The laptop itself has to lift everything from 5 to 10 inches (and sometimes a little more, depending on the size).

For a perfect position, the frame of your notebook screen should be at the same height (or slightly lower) at eye level.

For this I personally use a laptop stand that I put on my desk, but you can use anything that is stable and does the job: a bunch of large books, boxes, plastic boxes… Just make sure everything you use is stable and not damaged by the heat (or by heating your laptop).

There are also all kinds of height-adjustable laptop stands (affiliate link) that make your job easier.

This means that you need an external mouse and keyboard, because you cannot (and should not) enter text on a laptop keyboard or use the touchpad. They are at an unfavourable height and their operation is uncomfortable.

They have many possibilities in this area and are also budget conscious. We strongly recommend the use of wired instead of wireless devices. They are more reliable, more durable and easier to use.

If you don’t want to waste time looking for external keyboards and mice for your laptop, you can take this compact and inexpensive keyboard and USB mouse (partner links) with you.

The keyboard and mouse should be positioned so that the shoulders are relaxed during use, the elbows on the sides of the body and – very important! – the wrists should be in a straight line with the forearm.

If your forearm is higher (or lower, although this is rare), you will sooner or later feel discomfort and even pain.

Completion

You see all those pictures of people lying in bed or squatting on the couch, or apparently lying in a hammock and doing their work on the laptop…. but if you regularly work with a laptop, you know that’s impossible.

If you spend many hours in front of your notebook screen, as most people do today, you need to make sure you do everything you can to make your working hours as healthy and enjoyable as possible.

Choosing the ideal height for your desk and correctly adjusting the height of your chair, laptop screen and peripherals will, as you will see, make a big difference.

Sitting at work is one of the most important things when it comes to working with a laptop, and I hope you have all the details you need to make the right choice or at least adjust the current setting to make it as ergonomic as possible.
